Danger looms at Ho female prison

Published

on

The ceilings of the office section of the Ho Female Prison are caving in, thus causing fear and alarm among the officers as well as the convicts.

The situation has become a source of worry to the inmates.

“This is particularly scary on stormy days when the whole structure shakes with so much noise,” Chief Superintendent Janet Asabea, Officer-in-Charge of the prison, has said.

She, therefore, appealed to corporate bodies, churches and public-spirited individuals to come to the aid of the prison as soon as possible to avert a calamity.

Chief Superintendent Asabea said that “it takes decent facilities to reform prisoners and prepare them for reintegration into society after serving their time behind bars”.

She made the revelation when water producers and hardware dealers, Goldel, donated a consignment of bagged water, sanitary pads, detergents and toilet rolls and medications worth about GH¢3000 to the Correctional Centre last Friday.

Chief Superintendent Asabea said that it was only proper for members of the public to support the government in various ways, with regard to the welfare of prisoners.

“They have only lost their right to personal freedom but not the right to personal dignity” she added.

The officer-in-charge said that convicts needed the love and support of the society to change and later contribute their quota to national development.

She said that people could get wrongly accused and wrongly convicted, and for that matter prisoners should not be discriminated against.

On a brighter side, Chief Superintendent Asabea said that all the convicts at the Ho Female Prison had been vaccinated against COVID-19.

On his part, Mr Dela Gbeve, Managing Director of Godel said that the donation was in line with the company’s commitment to the welfare of not only convicts but the society in general.

In that vein, Godel stepped in to provide water to residents of Sokode in the Ho Municipality after a long period of insufficient water supply to the community.

Mr Gbeve said that Godel attached great importance to its corporate Social responsibility and would readily commit part of its profits to helping the society, hence the donation to the Ho Female Prison.
