Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has waded into the raging Founders’Day debate.
According to him the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot rewrite the history of Ghana.
“The United Gold Coast Convention(UGCC), at the time said independence gradually, in the shortest possibly time. Nkrumah said, Independence now, and he fought for it,” he said.
John Mahama said, it is for this reason that Ghanaians recognised Osagyefo Dr.Kwame as the founder of the country, adding that no one can rewrite the country’s history.
He finally added that “For those of you who don’t know, when the Queen agreed to give us our independence, the UGCC that Nana Akufo-Addo is fighting to be recognised as the founder’s of Ghana wrote a petition and sent people to England to tell the Queen not to grant independence because the country was not ready.”

Eight people, including four children, have sustained injuries after a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle somersaulted on the Tema–Akosombo Highway on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred at Teye-Kwame when the vehicle reportedly suffered a rear tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control.
Personnel from the Kpong Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the scene after receiving a distress call.
According to the GNFS Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer, the rescue team found the Hiace bus overturned by the roadside.
“Eight occupants, comprising four adults and four children, sustained various degrees of injuries,” the statement said.
“They were rescued from the vehicle and given first aid before being transported to Kings and Queens Hospital at Akuse Junction for further medical treatment.”
Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service indicate that the rear tyre of the Toyota Hiace burst while in motion, throwing the vehicle off balance and leading to the somersault.
The GNFS has reminded commercial drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance, especially tyres, to prevent such incidents on busy highways.
No fatalities were recorded in the accident.
The Tema–Akosombo Highway is a major corridor linking the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions and has recorded several traffic incidents this year.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed all aspirants campaigning in the Greater Accra Region to suspend their campaign activities on August 5 and 6 and instead mobilise supporters for the party’s planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration.
The directive was issued by the party’s National Steering Committee in a statement signed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the decision forms part of efforts to ensure a strong turnout for the demonstration, which is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The party said the protest would begin at 5:00 a.m., with participants expected to gather at the Supreme Court in Accra.
It further directed Regional, Constituency and Polling Station Executives in Greater Accra to work closely to mobilise members and supporters for the event.
“The National Steering Committee is calling on all aspirants currently campaigning across the Greater Accra Region to temporarily suspend their campaign activities on the 5th and 6th of August and join in mobilising support for the upcoming demonstration,” the statement noted.
The NPP appealed to party members and supporters to remain peaceful, disciplined and orderly throughout the protest.
The demonstration forms part of the party’s response to concerns it has raised over issues relating to Ghana’s democratic governance and the justice system.
The NPP leadership expressed confidence that party members would cooperate fully to ensure a successful and peaceful event.
