Keir Starmer steps down as UK Prime Minister and Labour leader

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced he will step down as Labour Party leader, triggering a contest to elect his successor as Prime Minister.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Sir Keir said he had accepted that he was โ€œnot best placed to lead the Labour Party into the next general electionโ€ after hearing feedback from his parliamentary party.

โ€œThe question my party is asking now is whether I am the right person to lead them into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question and I accept that answer with good grace,โ€ he said.

Sir Keir said every decision he made was โ€œabout putting the country I love first,โ€ which was why he would resign as Labour leader. He revealed he had spoken to His Majesty the King that morning to inform him of his decision.

He will remain Prime Minister until the leadership contest concludes. Starmer asked the Labour Partyโ€™s National Executive Committee to set a timetable with nominations opening on July 9 and the process completed by the summer recess, ensuring a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September.

In a personal note, Starmer said that after leaving โ€œthe biggest job in the country,โ€ he would focus on โ€œthe most important jobโ€: being the best husband to his wife Victoria, โ€œwho has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,โ€ and the best father to his children, โ€œwho are my pride and my joy.โ€

This comes less than two years since UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer won a landslide election victory. The country is now set for a seventh different prime minister in the decade since the Brexit vote.

โ€œHistory matters because it teaches people where they came from and inspires the future,โ€ Mahama said.

He described the ceremony as a significant act of institutional memory that ensures future generations understand the sacrifices made to build the party and protect Ghanaโ€™s democracy.

Kimathi Rawlings, son of the late President, expressed the familyโ€™s gratitude.

โ€œThe naming of this headquarters after our dad, Jerry John Rawlings, is far more than a symbolic gesture,โ€ he said.

The event ended with a cake-cutting to mark Rawlingsโ€™ birthday.

Rawlings, who died in November 2020, first led Ghana as a military ruler, then guided the transition to constitutional rule and served as the countryโ€™s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001. He remains one of the most influential figures in Ghanaโ€™s modern history.

The ceremony which was a moment of remembrance and celebration of his enduring legacy was attended by top party officials, government appointees and NDC faithfuls
