President John Dramani Mahama joined the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, and the Muslim community at the Black Star Square for Eid ul-Fitr prayers, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.
In his address, the President underscored that Eid represents not only a moment of celebration but also a call to sustain the values of discipline, sacrifice, and compassion cultivated during Ramadan. He urged Ghanaians to carry forward the spirit of the holy month in their daily interactions, promoting unity, tolerance, and mutual respect.
President Mahama reaffirmed government’s commitment to inclusive national development, emphasizing that efforts are being made to ensure that progress reaches every part of the country. He noted that national development requires a shared responsibility between government and citizens.
Highlighting Ghana’s long-standing tradition of religious harmony, the President described the nation as a shining example of peaceful coexistence and called on all citizens to safeguard this unity by rejecting division and fostering national cohesion.
The National Chief Imam commended the President for his leadership and fulfillment of commitments to the Ghanaian people, and offered prayers for his continued strength, wisdom, and success. He further called on all government appointees to support the President in advancing policies aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
The President also extended his warm wishes to all Muslims in Ghana on the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr and prayed for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the nation.
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko is expected at the party’s Accra headquarters on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to submit his completed nomination forms for the National Chairmanship race, a formal step that comes within the party’s extended filing window rather than marking his entry into the contest.
Mr Afoko publicly declared his candidacy in July 2026 and picked up his nomination forms when the collection period opened on August 18.
Tuesday’s filing is the next required step: submitting the completed paperwork before the deadline, which the NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee pushed back from August 27 to August 29 after a wave of interest from aspirants across the party’s national positions.
He is not running unopposed. Mr Afoko’s campaign is built around what he calls the “3R Agenda”: Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture, arguing that the party’s most urgent task is to heal internal divisions and rebuild its structures before mounting a campaign to retake the presidency in 2028, a pitch that carries personal weight.
Since declaring his bid, Mr Afoko has held engagements with delegates and grassroots supporters in several regions, framing his candidacy around reconciliation and unity ahead of the party’s 2028 push to return to power after its 2024 election defeat.
Tuesday’s filing sets Mr Afoko formally on the path through the rest of the NPP’s national officer election calendar: vetting runs August 31 to September 3, results are due September 5, appeals will be heard September 6–7, and delegates are scheduled to vote on October 3, 2026.

The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36 year old man, Gyamfi Christian, over his alleged involvement in a fake gold scam in the Berekum Municipality.
According to the Police, the suspect is part of a group that allegedly sold 110 troy ounces of fake gold to a gold aggregator for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
The case was reported by the victim, 29 year old Christopher Awuni, who told the Police that four men presented themselves as gold sellers and sold the gold to him.
The gold was later tested and found to be fake. It has since been kept by the Police as an exhibit.
The Bono Regional Police Command, in a press release signed by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, stated that Gyamfi Christian was arrested on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District.
During interrogation, he allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
He identified three other members of the group as Abraham, alias Frenchman, who is alleged to be the leader, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar. The three are currently wanted by the Police.
Preliminary investigations have further established that the group allegedly defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year.
The suspect is currently in Police custody and is assisting with investigations as efforts continue to arrest the remaining suspects.
The Bono Regional Police Command has urged the public to be cautious when engaging in gold transactions and to report suspicious activities to the Police.
