ATU holds education outreach, clean-up exercise to mark 75th anniversary

The Accra Technical University (ATU) as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, held an education outreach programme for the Teshie Training Centre and Teshie St John’s Senior High School (SHS) in Accra last Friday.

The outreach and donation was also aimed at contributing to the enhancement of teaching and learning at the schools as well as a commitment to community engagement and social responsibility.
The items presented were plastic beakers, 600ml glass beaker, 250 conical flask, plastic measuring cups, measuring cylinders, stirring rod, plastic pipette, glass test tubes, plastic test tubes and thermometers.
They also presented inoculating loops, pony beads, kidney beans, pinto beans, rubber gasket, plastic weighing bowls, flexible tube, tissue culture plates, magnet wires and aluminum foils.
The students were taken through some practical laboratory demonstrations and enlightened on the need to build careers in applied sciences.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Science Laboratory Department of ATU, Dr Phyllis Naa Yarley Otu encouraged young scientists, especially females to consider the prospects and impact of studying applied sciences.
“We need to develop suitable technologies for local community needs and expand our advisory roles to government and the industries,” she added.
On his part, the Outreach Committee Chairman, Mr Kojo Ayittey added that, it was important to have hands-on skills to ensure that students get employment after school.
He therefore urged the students to consider attaining higher education at the ATU, since they would be guaranteed jobs after completion.
The Principal of Teshie Training Centre, Mabel Asare expressed appreciation to the ATU for the support and vowed to utilise the items to make the ATU proud.
Prior to the outreach programme, the ATU also held a clean-up exercise at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the ATU community.
Students, faculty members and volunteers came out in their numbers to engage in the exercise aimed at improving sanitation within the area.

The Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has praised engineers and technical teams working to restore electricity after a fire at the Akosombo Substation disrupted power supply.
He said this after visiting the facility on Monday night to assess ongoing repair works following the incident, which affected the control room and caused the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid.
During the visit, he interacted with engineers and technicians who have been working continuously under difficult conditions to restore operations.
He said he was impressed by their dedication, courage, and professionalism despite the challenges.
The minister commended the teams for their resilience and sacrifice, noting that their efforts reflect a strong sense of duty and commitment to national service.
He assured them of the government’s full support as they continue with the restoration work.
He also assured the public that authorities are doing everything possible to restore stable electricity supply as soon as possible.

Police debunk media reports alleging suspects in Mr Sammy Gyamfi father -in-aw’s murder case have escaped from lawful custody
The Ghana Police Service in the Western Central Region has denied reports that suspects in a murder case have escaped from lawful custody.
In a press release dated April 27, 2026, the Western Central Regional Police Command described the reports as false and misleading.
The claims suggested that suspects linked to the murder of Mr. Andrews Amankwah, reported to be the father-in-law of Sammy Gyamfi, had escaped.
The police said the public should disregard the publication.
According to the command, the three accused persons Kojo Amponsah, also known as Kamakazie; Emmanuel Appiah, also known as Taller; and Tanko Bashiru, also known as TK remain in custody.
It said the suspects have been put before a court and remanded into prison custody at the Tarkwa Local Prison. They are expected to reappear before the court on May 7, 2026.
The command said the suspects were arrested in February 2026 through intelligence-led operations at different hideouts in Kumasi.
They are being investigated for their alleged involvement in the murder and other suspected crimes, including car theft cases reported in Tarkwa.
It added that a police team visited the suspects at the prison on April 27 and confirmed that they are still in custody.
The police warned that persons who create or spread false information that can cause fear or panic risk arrest and prosecution under the laws of Ghana.
