Dr Ziblim Iddi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gushegu Constituency in the Northern Region has withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary.
He made this known to the constituents when he sent a letter to that effect to the general secretary of the party and copied to regional and constituency executives at the weekend.
“I write to formally inform your good office that I do not intend to contest as a candidate in the parliamentary primaries scheduled for June 20, 2020 in the Gushegu constituency,” Dr Iddi wrote.
The withdrawal of Dr Iddi, who is also the deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, from the primary has thrown the constituency into total shock as nobody within the rank and file of the party in the constituency thought of it.
Dr Iddi had filed to contest the primary and was campaigning vigorously and all of a sudden stepped down and his withdrawal from the contest has been the talk in the Gushegu constituency and its surrounding as supporters, members and well wishers of the party were seen in groups discussing the unfortunate decision.
There have been rumours by the constituents that big wigs in the party might have forced him to step down while others also blamed it on the internal bickering and wrangling in the constituency.
However, Dr Iddi in the said letter stated that the decision was personal and that there were no external forces insisting that “I arrived at this painful decision after a very broad consultation and deep introspection so I entreat the leadership of the party and electoral directorate of the NPP to remove his name and picture on the ballot paper and the Notice of Poll.
Dr Iddi called on his supporters, sympathisers and well wishers not to be disturbed about his withdrawal and that his loyalty to party was intact and appealed to them to continue their support and assistance to the party and not create disaffection.

Work has commenced to reclaim the Lafa water retention basin at Mallam as part of government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding in Mallam, Weija, Dansoman and surrounding communities.
The operation is being led by the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, and is aimed at removing years of accumulated solid waste, silt and illegal structures that have significantly reduced the basin’s capacity to hold water.
The exercise includes dredging of the basin, evacuation of waste to a designated landfill site, demolition of illegal structures within the water reserve and the construction of protective embankments to secure the area.
The intervention, coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force, forms part of a broader national effort to restore waterways and drainage channels across Accra following the devastating June 29 floods.
Government has made resources and equipment available for the exercise, with similar works ongoing simultaneously at Oyarifa, East Legon and the Kpeshie Lagoon area.
The Task Force has urged the public to cooperate with the ongoing exercise and to desist from activities that obstruct waterways and undermine flood mitigation efforts.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has reviewed the restrictions on motorbike riding within the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region.
Effective Monday, August 25, 2026, men and women are now permitted to ride motorbikes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.
The curfew hours, however, remain unchanged from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Government has also reiterated that there is a total ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipality and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons, and any persons found with arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
The government has called on Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.
