The Minority has expressed its approval of Gertrude Torkornoo as the Chief Justice nominee.
This is despite their strong disagreement with the Supreme Court’s recent judgment annulling the election of James Gyakye Quayson in Assin North.
Justice Torkornoo, who was part of the 7-Member panel that decided the aforementioned case, faced scrutiny from the Minority when she appeared before the Appointments Committee on May 26.
The Minority had initially insisted that no decision be made on her nomination until the full judgment in the case was released.
Speaking on behalf of the Minority, Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, explained that despite their differences with Justice Torkornoo, they believe she possesses the qualifications necessary to serve as Chief Justice.
During a press conference today, the NDC represented on the Appointments Committee said they had “reached a unanimous decision to approve the Chief Justice nominee.”
Acknowledging the current concerns surrounding the reputation of the judiciary, the NDC hopes that Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, as a female Chief Justice, will be instrumental in restoring the dignity and credibility of the judicial system.
“Her impressive curriculum vitae highlights her extensive experience, having served as a judge from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, and eventually at the Supreme Court. We firmly believe that capable women should be afforded opportunities to hold key national positions. Despite our disagreement with her jurisprudence, we recognize her qualifications for the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana,” stated Mr. Ayariga.
This decision by the NDC signifies an important step in the approval process, demonstrating a willingness to move forward and support Justice Torkornoo’s candidacy. It highlights the party’s commitment to promoting justice and the rule of law, even in the face of disagreements with recent court rulings.
As the process continues, attention will be focused on Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, with expectations that her leadership will bring about positive changes and reforms within the judiciary. The NDC’s approval adds weight to her nomination, signaling a collective effort to restore public confidence and uphold the principles of justice for all Ghanaians.

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has advised musicians to focus on building financial security rather than relying mainly on awards, shows and public recognition.
According to him, the difficult situations some senior musicians face after years in the industry should serve as a lesson to younger artistes.
Medikal made the comments on TikTok while sharing his thoughts on an interview involving veteran Ghanaian musician DJ Barosky, whom he claimed is currently homeless in the United Kingdom.
He expressed surprise at the situation, noting that he grew up listening to and admiring some of the senior musicians who influenced his generation.
“Bro, right now, social media, I know if you tell which one be real or what be fake,” Medikal stated, questioning the reality of what people see online.
He argued that musicians should make money and put proper financial plans in place while they are active in the industry.
“If you be artist for this country, you for make money, collect money, put certain things in place,” he said.
Medikal stressed that awards and performances were important but should not replace financial planning.
He encouraged artistes to be careful with their relationships and to understand that the entertainment industry is largely driven by money.
According to him, even friendships can change when a person’s financial circumstances change.
He therefore urged musicians not to become discouraged by financial losses but to remain focused on creating wealth.
“Make money. If you lose money, still collect money,” he advised.
Medikal said the experiences of older artistes should encourage current musicians to take their finances seriously and prepare for life beyond their peak years in the entertainment industry.

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” over an alleged threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo.
According to the Police, the 46-year-old former boxer was arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, in connection with the alleged threat.
The Police said the arrest followed a video circulating on social media in which Ayitey Powers is alleged to have issued the threat against Mr Ampofo.
He is currently in Police custody and is assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine the appropriate action to be taken in accordance with the law.
The Command has urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information about the matter while the investigation continues.
