Team Hubes Dance Crew emerges winners of Ghana DanceSport League 2024

Saturday, October 5, saw the inaugural edition of the Ghana DanceSport League, with Team Hubes Dance Crew winning the number 1 spot.

They snatched the coveted spot from United Kings Academy, 4Bent Dance Crew, Asa Academy, Flames Dance Company, and BAS Academy.

This came off at the Street Dance Fiesta of the 10th edition of the Ghana Dance Festival at the Alliance Francaise.

The DanceSport League had a presentation style format, where dance crews were required to perform their own routines for all rounds. The 1st stage saw all six dance crews perform their routines, and the top four, based on creativity, team work, execution, and showmanship, moved on to the 2nd stage.

The top four balloted to determine who they were going against in their respective fixtures. Team Hubes went against 4bent Dance Crew, beating them to qualify to the finals, while United Dance Academy went against Asa Dance Crew, beating them to qualify for the finals.

To determine the 3rd place, a fixture between 4bent Dance Crew and Asa Dance Academy was held, where 4bent clinched the 3rd place with a no-show from Asa Academy.

The final showdown saw Team Hubes and United Kings Academy in a fixture, where Team Hubes emerged the winner of the league, to the delight of judges and the cheering audience.

Team Hubes, representing Korle Gonno in Accra, won GH₵ 4,000 for 1st place. United Kings Academy, hailing from Abesim in Sunyani, won GH₵ 2000 for 2nd place. 4Bent Dance Crew representing Dansoman in Accra, won GH₵ 1000 for 3rd place. All top three clubs were given medals for participation.

The judges for the DanceSport League were Adjetey Sowah, the 1986 World Dance champion, Dr. Terry Bright Ofosu, dance lecturer at the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana and the 1989 National Dance Champion, and Yvonne “Laladzy” Okyere, the CEO of the all-ladies dance crew, Flawless Dance Studio.

According to Robert Klah, founder of the Ghana DanceSport League, “Dance is a sport. When dance made its way to the Olympics, this truth was further amplified. On the back of dance being a sport, DanceSport Ghana has been founded to promote dance as a sport, and we are happy to inaugurate the Ghana DanceSport League (Professional).”

He added that “Finally, dance athletes can look forward to an annual league to participate in while developing their career. Our next line of action is the inauguration of the Ghana DanceSport School League, which will cater to the amateur dance community. “

“We already have affiliations with international dancesport organizations and we are looking forward to creating avenues for our dance athletes to participate in such events. To this end, we are looking forward to having DanceSport conversations making its way to regular sport programs, because we are here to stay,” he said.

The inaugural edition of the Ghana DanceSport League was part of main activities of the Street Dance Fiesta of the 10th edition of the Ghana Dance Festival. It was preceded by a dance workshop featuring DWP Academy and its sensational members including Lisa Quama, Endurance Grand, Demzy Baye, King Nature and Richael.

Following the workshop, guests were treated to performances from the best talents in the street dance, including the Millitantz Dance Family, Arenees Dance Crew, Flawless Dance Studio, 4bent Dance Crew, Black Illusion Dance Crew, and many more.

To spice up the performances, Nila Dance Academy performed an Indian routine to “Makoma” by King Paluta, to the delight to the audience.

Alex Ekubo dies at age 40

Popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, on Monday passed away after a long battle with cancer on Monday.

According to reports he died at age 40.

Ekubo was best known for his roles in the Weekend Getaway and the music video titled Johnny by Yemi Alade in 2013.

 He had won many awards and accolades for his work in the entertainment industry and humanitarian efforts.

While his family and management are yet to issue a statement, tributes have been pouring in from fans and friends in Nigeria’s and Ghanaian films industry.

The Nollywood star made his acting debut in the 2005 production, Sinners in the House.

He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Calabar and broke into stardom in 2010 after competing in the Mr Nigeria competition.

In 2013, he won Best Supporting Actor in the Best of Nollywood Awards for his role as Andre Dikeh in Weekend Getaway.

Ekubo had received nine awards during his career, including Best of Nollywood’s Best Actor of the year (2016) and Best Lead Actor (2022).

Nigeria’s First Lady gave him a Special Recognition Award in 2018 for his contribution and development of the country’s entertainment industry.

In 2020, he was inducted into the UN’s Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) under 40, for his efforts in entertainment and social development.

Black Sherif makes it double, wins TGMA27 Artiste of the Year

Mohammed Ismail Sherif, known in showbiz circles as ‘Black Sherif,’ on Saturday made history by joining the elite list of musicians to achieved the ‘sophomore’ feat by winning the Artiste of the Year title on two occasions.

Black Sherif first won the Artiste of the Year title in 2023, shortly after his explosive entry into the music scene.

On Saturday night, May 9, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, the ‘Iron Boy’ hitmaker overcame a strong field of contenders, including Medikal, Wendy Shay, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, and Diana Hamilton, to reclaim the crown.

On the night, Black Sherif was the biggest winner, walking away with a total of five awards.

In addition to the ultimate prize, he also won the Album/EP of the Year – Iron Boy, Songwriter of the Year – for his song ‘Sacrifice,’ Afropop Song of the Year – ‘Sacrifice’ and Hip-Hop Song of the Year – ‘Where Dem Boys.’

The win cements his legacy as the youngest artist to win the top honour twice, at just 24 years old, placing him alongside legends like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, and VIP/VVIP.

Receiving his awards, the Konongo-born star expressed profound gratitude to God, his family, and his fans. In a standout moment of generosity, he requested that his GH¢100,000 sponsorship package from Guinness Ghana be shared with rising artists Arathejay and Gonaboy to support their upcoming projects and listening parties.

The 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) also saw other notable wins, including Medikal taking home four awards, Kofi Kinaata and Kojo Blak securing two on a night that celebrated the continued global rise of Ghanaian music.

Wendy Shay, Keche, Moliy, Piesie Esther, Diana Hamilton, Kofi Owusu Peprah, Kwabena Kwabena and others also picked up awards.
