Speaker of Parliament inaugurates open Parliament Steering Committee, launches action plan
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has launched the Open Parliament Steering Committee and the Open Parliament Action Plan.
The ceremony was under the theme “Achieving Gender Equality: Action by Action.”
The Speaker highlighted the critical role Parliament plays in translating the will of the people into inclusive legislation, responsive policies, and accountable governance.
“The International Day of Parliamentarianism is worth celebrating, as it offers an opportunity not only to recognise and promote achievements in strengthening democratic governance, but also to pause and reflect on the remaining gaps in institutionalising parliamentary democracy,” he said.
He noted that the event was scheduled to coincide with the International Day of Parliamentarianism to reinforce the importance of open and inclusive governance.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, stated that the International Day of Parliamentarianism is intended to recognise the vital role Parliaments play globally as pillars of democratic governance.
He noted that this marks the first time Ghana is formally observing the day.
“The gravity of our observance is further accentuated as we convene to witness the launch of the Open Parliament Action Plan by the Open Government Partnership Caucus,” he said.
Delivering a statement on behalf of the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, described the Open Parliament Action Plan as a transformative initiative aimed at strengthening the relationship between Parliament and the public.
She said the plan represents a bold commitment to making Parliament more transparent, accessible, and responsive to the needs of Ghanaians.
The Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, described the launch as a key milestone in the effort to build a citizen-focused and accountable Parliament.
He added that the International Day of Parliamentarianism is a call to action to recommit to the highest standards of public service and democratic accountability.
The inauguration was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including the Majority and Minority Members of Parliament, members of the Open Parliament Steering Committee, the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Caucus, Parliamentary Network Africa, representatives from civil society organisations, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional and religious leaders, student bodies, the Parliamentary Press Corps, and other media partners.

Police arrest three suspects for robbery attack at Jukwa
The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects for a robbery attack at Jukwa near Afransie in the Western Region.
The suspects were arrested on July 15, 2025 after a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GT 7426-23, transporting gold concentrate from a mining site to Wassa Akropong, was attacked near Jukwa town.
The occupants of the vehicle at the time of the robbery included the driver, Kofi Gyamfi, a security guard, Bashiru and one other person.
The robbers attacked the vehicle and made away with the gold concentrate.
Following a swift Police intervention, suspect Foster Peprah, a small-scale miner, was arrested at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that he carried out the robbery with one Isaac, who is currently on the run. During interrogation, Foster mentioned Kofi Gyamfi, the driver, as the individual who invited them to carry out the robbery.
Kofi Gyamfi was later arrested, and he named Bashiru, the security guard, as the originator of the plan. Bashiru was subsequently arrested at his hideout in Wassa Gyedua.
All three suspects are currently in Police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest suspect Isaac who is currently on the run.

National Safety Awards 2025: Minister calls for collective effort to promote safety culture
Speaking at the National Safety Awards 2025 organised by the Ghana National Fire Service, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has underscored the importance of collective effort in promoting a culture of safety in Ghana. He highlighted a collective approach to safety.
Muntaka praised the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for its outstanding work in fire prevention, emergency response, and safety education.
He noted that the Service’s efforts have not only saved lives but also protected properties and livelihoods, contributing significantly to the national economy.
The Minister commended the GNFS for recording significant growth in fire safety audits and inspections and efforts made in promoting regulatory compliance and public awareness of fire safety standards.
Mr.Muntaka called on all stakeholders, including the public, private sector, civil society, and media, to join the GNFS in making safety a national ethos.
He emphasized that safety should be a conscious lifestyle for every Ghanaian and encouraged the empowerment of youth to see safety as a strength.
The Minister, who was also presented with a plaque and citation for his commitment to the Service, congratulated all the award recipients, noting that their excellence serves as a beacon for others to follow.
The Ag. Chief Fire Officer Daniella Ntow Sapong stated that the event provides a platform to honour institutions and individuals who embed safety into their operations, behaviours, values, and everyday lives, setting the tone for a new culture in Ghana where safety becomes second nature to everyone.
She called on all stakeholders to support the Service in achieving its mandate in protecting lives and properties.
