MTN Ghana is marking 30 years of operations with a renewed pledge to serve as a strategic partner in Ghana’s national development, announcing major investments in fibre infrastructure, network modernisation and sustainable digital platforms to carry the country into its next chapter of digital transformation.
The milestone was officially launched on May 14, at MTN House in Accra, under the theme “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,” at an event attended by the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr Samuel Nartey George, and a cross-section of the media.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr Stephen Blewett, described the anniversary as more than a corporate celebration, calling it a uniquely Ghanaian story shaped by connection, inclusion and shared progress over three decades.
Mr Blewett said MTN Ghana was positioning itself for the next phase of Ghana’s digital economy, with targeted investments in fibre expansion, core network modernisation and advanced technologies that will support productivity, innovation and economic growth across sectors.
“The next phase of Ghana’s development will be built on mobile platforms on farms, in markets, in clinics, classrooms and creative studios. Technology will remove geography as a disadvantage and open Ghanaian talent to the world,” he stated.
Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, congratulated MTN Ghana on its 30-year milestone, describing it as part of a broader national success story in which Ghana’s telecommunications sector has evolved into a modern, mobile first, data driven ecosystem serving tens of millions of subscribers.
Within that journey, the Minister said, MTN Ghana has played a distinctive and influential role, citing its early introduction of GSM technology, leadership in Mobile Money, continued network investments, listing on the Ghana Stock Exchange and contribution as one of Ghana’s largest corporate taxpayers.
The government, he said, remains committed to working with industry players, including MTN, to address shared challenges such as rural connectivity, infrastructure protection, cyber security, digital skills development and environmental sustainability.
As part of activities planned nationwide, customers will have the opportunity to participate in anniversary promotions featuring a wide range of exciting prizes to be won, as MTN celebrates the people who have powered its journey over the past three decades.

Don’t answer NPP with aggression – George Opare Addo urges NDC to choose ideas over confrontation

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, who is also the NDC National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, has congratulated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on electing new national executives, but says the outcome should force a deeper reflection on the future of Ghanaian politics.
In a statement titled “What has become of Ghanaian politics?”, Opare Addo said while the NPP’s choice must be respected, it raises legitimate questions about the direction political mobilisation in Ghana is heading.
The NPP on Saturday elected a new team led by John Boadu as National Chairman, Justin Frimpong Kodua as General Secretary, Titus Glover as National Organiser and Abanga Fuseini as National Youth Organiser, among others, to rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
“That is democracy. And democracy demands that we respect the choices political parties make,” he stated.
He however questioned whether Ghanaian politics is drifting towards confrontation, aggressive mobilisation and political combat rather than ideas and national consensus.
“There is a difference between being politically tough and being politically violent. There is a difference between mobilisation and intimidation,” he warned.
Turning his attention to his own party, Opare Addo said the upcoming NDC national executive elections should not be about who can win an internal contest, but about what kind of NDC Ghana needs.
He recalled that the 2022 NDC leadership change under Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Fifi Kwetey was more than a personnel change – it was a reset that helped the party rebrand, reach the middle class, young professionals, students and the business community, leading to its 2024 presidential and parliamentary victory.
He cited the Green Army initiative by the youth wing as an example of organising young people around purpose and political consciousness, not just numbers at rallies.
According to him, the NDC must not be tempted to respond to the NPP’s new leadership style by becoming a replica.
“The answer to aggressive politics cannot be greater aggression. The answer to political intimidation cannot be political intimidation of our own. The answer to violence must be a stronger commitment to democratic mobilisation,” he said.
Opare Addo argued the next NDC leadership must be modern, intellectually confident, inclusive and capable of inspiring youth without weaponising them.
“Let the NPP choose its path. Let the NDC choose ours,” he stated, adding that delegates should ask not only who can defeat the NPP, but who can build the kind of NDC Ghana needs.
“An NDC that is fierce in competition but responsible in power,” he concluded.

Betty Krosbi Mensah congratulates Hawa Koomson, but condemns pepper spray proposal

Former Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress, (NDC)for Afram Plains North, Betty Krosbi Mensah, has congratulated Mavis Hawa Koomson on her election as National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a statement, the MP, who is also an NDC National Women’s Organiser hopeful, described Hawa Koomson as a former colleague in Parliament and wished her wisdom, strength and success in her new role.
However, she took exception to a suggestion attributed to the newly elected NPP Women’s Organiser to provide pepper spray to women organisers as protection against political violence.
“While I congratulate Hawa, I must respectfully condemn the suggestion of providing pepper spray to women organisers as a response to political violence,” she stated.
Mrs. Mensah said while the intention may be to promote personal safety, especially in light of Hawa Koomson’s own experiences, women leaders must champion peace, unity and responsible leadership.
“Our women organisers should be empowered with knowledge, skills, economic opportunities, access to resources, leadership training and platforms that strengthen their participation in national development,” she noted.
She stressed that political differences should not prevent a shared commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian women.
“As a former Member of Parliament myself, I understand the responsibility that comes with leadership and the expectations placed on women who occupy important positions,” she added.
The former Afram Plains North MP said as she pursues her own ambition to become NDC National Women’s Organiser, she remains committed to peace, inclusion and strong women’s leadership.
“Women Empowered. Women United. Women Leading,” she concluded.
