Traders at the Race Course market in Kumasi are counting their losses after an inferno gutted the market in the early hours of Monday morning.
About 60 stalls, properties and food items running into thousands of cedis have been destroyed by the fire.
It took the intervention of four fire tenders to completely douse the fire.
The cause of the fire is however yet to be established as fire officers work around the clock to salvage the debris from the incident.
Traders are salvaging the little of items razed down by the inferno.
Clothes, Animal proteins and food commodities including local spices have been burnt beyond recognition.
According to the regional fire office, they had a distress call from the National office about the fire incident and swiftly rushed to the market ti tend to the blazing inferno.
Speaking to journalists in an interview, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Henry Giwah advised traders and households in the region to take all precautionary measures as the harmattan sets in.
The racecourse market is a temporary market settlement for traders who were relocated from the old Kejetia market.
The traders are calling for an expedited completion of the stalled New Kejetia Redevelopment Market.
The fire incident is the second to hit Ghana’s second-largest city in two weeks.

Volta has enormous agricultural potential – Regional Minister

Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, says the Volta Region holds enormous agricultural potential and efforts must be geared towards connecting farmers to the needed resources to unlock that potential.
He said focus must be on linking farmers to resources, technology, financing and markets to increase production, create jobs and build sustainable livelihoods.
Hon. Gunu made the remarks at the national launch of the Ghana Tomato Self-Sufficiency Initiative (GHATSI) held at Anloga in the Volta Region on Tuesday, September 15.
The initiative, under the theme “Produce at Home. Feed the Nation. Export the Surplus,” seeks to boost local tomato production, processing and marketing while reducing Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported tomatoes.
The launch was attended by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, his Deputy, John Setor Dumelo, Feed Ghana Coordinator, Bright Demordzi, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, MMDCEs, farmers and other stakeholders.
Mr.Gunu expressed appreciation to the Minister for Food and Agriculture for the support announced for the region, including two excavators, 200 cartons of organic fertiliser, and GH¢200,000 for Ms. Kuatudzo Esther Dela, a tomato farmer and processor from Ziope.
He described the initiative as an important step towards making agriculture a stronger driver of food security, job creation and economic growth in the Volta Region.

NDC orders members to stop premature parliamentary campaign activities

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed members engaging in activities with parliamentary campaign undertones to immediately stop.
The directive was issued by the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) following what it described as activities by some members with parliamentary ambitions across various constituencies.
In a press release dated September 14, 2026, and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC cautioned members against organising or participating in activities that could promote or advance a parliamentary candidature before the official opening of nominations.
The party specifically mentioned meetings, engagements, constituency tours, donations and public appearances, as well as any other activities intended or reasonably perceived to be promoting a parliamentary bid.
According to the NDC, such activities are inappropriate and could disrupt the party’s unity, cohesion and orderly functioning.
It warned that members who disregard the directive would face disciplinary action and severe sanctions under the party’s Constitution, rules and regulations.
The FEC has also directed Regional, Constituency, Branch and other party officers to ensure that the directive is followed.
They have been asked to report any breaches to the appropriate party authorities for action.
The NDC said it remains committed to a transparent, orderly and credible process for selecting its parliamentary candidates.
The party added that it would announce the opening of nominations and the applicable guidelines at the appropriate time.
The directive comes as the NDC begins its 2026 internal elections process.
The party has already opened nominations for constituency executive positions, but has made clear that the current campaign window does not cover members pursuing or considering parliamentary ambitions.
The party urged all members to respect its established processes and remain disciplined in the interest of party unity.
