Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Debate:MPs should be sensitive to views of constituents – Della Sowah
Member of Parliament for Kpando constituency, Della Sowah has cautioned colleague MPs not to force personal views on their constituents regarding the current LGBTQ+ debate.
According to her, every MP should be sensitive to the views of the people they represent on their tolerance towards LGBTQ+ before making statements in support of it.
Ahead of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill debate in Parliament, Della Sowah, who is one of the eight lawmakers sponsoring anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, in an interaction with a section of the media has called on her colleague MPs to consider views of constituents.
She added that recent Afrobarometer survey released by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has shown that majority of Ghanaians are opposed to same-sex relationships.
Della Sowah stressed that the survey which was released in July 2021 indicated that although majority of Ghanaians are tolerant of persons from different ethnicities, only 7% are tolerant of persons of same-sex relationships, adding that “In my constituency the tolerant rate is minus minus 1.”
“If you represent people don’t push your views on them. Every country has its values and morals,” she said.
She further urged her colleagues not to allow other foreign cultures to influence their views because what is acceptable in one country may not be tolerated elsewhere.
“Polygamy is not a crime in Ghana if we lived in US or Canada my late father would have been jailed. The popular saying is one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Don’t feed poison to Ghanaians,” she said.
According to her the Bible in Acts 26:24 says “While Paul was making this defense, Festus said loudly, “Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great education is turning you toward madness.”
Mrs.Sowah charged her colleagues not to run ahead of the people they represent in parliament.
The National Operations Directorate (NOD) Surveillance Unit, of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a 32-year-old man, Akoto Nelson, for posing as a police officer during a public event at the Black Star Square in Accra.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday, 19th October 2025, by a team of officers deployed to provide security at a musical concert. The team observed the suspect dressed in a police uniform with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) behaving suspiciously. Upon interrogation, he admitted that he was not a police officer.
Investigations revealed that the suspect impersonated a police officer to gain free entry to the event, claiming he did not have money to pay the entry fee. He further disclosed that the uniform belonged to a deceased Chief Inspector, identified as Gyasi, from whom he obtained the police accoutrements in 2022.
A subsequent search conducted at his residence in Taifa-Ashaiman uncovered several items that were retained as exhibits. These include one toy P99 pistol, one pepper spray, two ZTE mini handsets, one pepper spray pouch, one ZTE charger, one Xinfa cutter knife, some complimentary cards, one voter ID in the name of Akoto Nelson Elikem, and one birth certificate in the name of Nelson Akoto.
Preliminary investigations further established that the suspect works as a security guard and a messenger at a private company. He remains in police custody and will be put before the court.
The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has disbursed GHS134,000 to 22 students under the latest round of his Scholarship and Bursaries Programme.
According to a statement from his office, the 22 beneficiaries are enrolled in 16 tertiary institutions across the country.
They are studying various courses, including medicine, marketing, law, public health, midwifery, business administration, education, and secretaryship.
The MP’s office commended the beneficiaries, especially the five students currently studying medicine and physician assistantship, encouraging them to remain committed to their studies.
The statement indicated that the scholarship initiative, which began in 2017, aims to support brilliant but needy students from the Ofoase Ayirebi Constituency to further their education. So far, about 700 students have benefited from the program.
