The Omanhene of Berekum, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo, has urged residents in the Bono Region to strictly adhere to the safety protocols to fight the COVID-19 as the region recorded its first confirmed case.
The Omanhene said he was worried that some residents, drivers and operators of tricycles, popularly called ‘pragyia’, were not attaching seriousness to the observation of COVID-19 safety protocols.
Last Wednesday May 6, 2020, the Bono Region recorded its first positive case of COVID-19 at Sampa in the Jaman North district by a Togolese national who was in the company of some other foreigners who entered Ghana illegally.
Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo, who is also a surgeon at the Regional Hospital in Sunyani, said in an interview in his palace at Berekum in the Bono Region that discussions were underway between the Police and the Berekum Traditional Council to arrest and sanction any resident who flouts the safety protocols, especially in relation to the wearing of nose masks and the observation of physical distancing.
Berekum is one of the largest cities in the Bono Region where tricycles, popularly known as ‘Pragyia’ are the major means of transport.
The Bono Regional Co-ordinating Council recently banned the operations of ‘ pragyia’ in the region but lifted the ban after about a month and instructed that each tricycle should carry a maximum of two passengers, who together with the operator must be in a nose mask at all times.
A visit to the Central Business District of Berekum, showed number of passengers and operators of ‘pragyia’ not wearing nose masks, a situation the Omanhene described as worrying.
He said it was about time residents realised that the coronavirus disease was real and could infect anyone, regardless of one’s status in society.
Meanwhile, the Omanhene has presented assorted items worth over Twenty-three Ghana cedis to the Berekum Municipal and Berekum West District offices of the Ghana Health Service for distribution to the various health facilities in the two districts.
The items included 1,000 pieces of nose masks, 600 bottles of hand-sanitiser, ten boxes of hand gloves, 12 pieces of infrared thermometer and 10 packets of tissue paper and ten gallons and 20 Veronica buckets.

The Ministry of Education says it will establish a Technical Working Committee to conduct a comprehensive review of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) after the current placement exercise.
The Ministry said the review follows a call by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference for greater transparency, accountability and an eventual review of the system.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Ministry maintained that the CSSPS is fundamentally a merit-based system, with merit taking precedence over protocol in the placement of qualified candidates.
It explained that the system is designed to ensure that placement decisions are based on established criteria and that qualified students are treated fairly.
However, the Ministry acknowledged the need to continuously improve and strengthen the placement system.
According to it, the Technical Working Committee will examine the various components of the CSSPS, identify areas that require improvement and recommend measures to make the system more transparent and accountable.
The review will seek to ensure that the CSSPS remains credible, efficient, fair and responsive to the needs of students, parents and schools.
The Ministry further stressed that CSSPS placement is free and warned parents and candidates against paying money to secure a placement or have a placement changed.
It urged any parent or guardian with credible evidence that an official of the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, CSSPS Secretariat, Ghana Technical Vocational Education and Training or any third party is demanding money for placement services to report the matter to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
The Ministry assured that the identity of persons who report such cases will be protected.
The Education Ministry said it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the CSSPS and ensuring that merit, fairness and transparency remain central to the placement process.

The Paramount Chief of Bamvum, Abdulai Ziblim, has donated a one-acre plot of land at Jongshegu, a suburb of Tamale, to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for the construction of a new fire station.
The Northern Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFO I Joseph Koranteng, led a delegation to formally accept the land and expressed appreciation to the Chief for his commitment to public safety.
The proposed fire station is expected to improve emergency response times and strengthen fire safety coverage as Jongshegu and surrounding communities continue to expand rapidly.
The Chief called on stakeholders to support the swift development of the facility, while ACFO I Koranteng described the donation as a strong example of collaboration between traditional authorities and state institutions to protect lives and property.
