Ghana is taking steps to exit its International Monetary Fund IMF programme before the end of the year, says the minister of education, Haruna Iddrisu.
Mr Iddrisu made this known while speaking on the country’s economic recovery efforts and ongoing discussions with international partners.
He explained that government has already begun conversations beyond the IMF programme, including engagements with other international financial institutions to support Ghana’s post IMF economic path.
According to him, discussions have taken place with development finance institutions such as the World Bank and the European Development Corporation Fund, which he described as sources of friendly and concessional financing.
Mr Iddrisu noted that these partners have shown strong interest and readiness to support Ghana as it transitions away from the IMF arrangement.
He indicated that preparations are underway for life after the IMF, expressing confidence that Ghana could exit the programme either before the end of August or by the close of the year.
The minister assured that alternative financing options are being explored to ensure economic stability once the IMF programme ends.
He referenced outstanding financial figures, including earnings and cumulative amounts running into billions of dollars, which he noted require careful consideration as part of the transition process.
Mr Iddrisu stressed the need for transparency and prudent management of these finances to protect the national interest and sustain economic gains made under the IMF programme.
He maintained that Ghana’s exit from the IMF must be well planned to avoid setbacks and to ensure that the economy remains stable and resilient going forward.

Work has commenced to reclaim the Lafa water retention basin at Mallam as part of government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding in Mallam, Weija, Dansoman and surrounding communities.
The operation is being led by the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, and is aimed at removing years of accumulated solid waste, silt and illegal structures that have significantly reduced the basin’s capacity to hold water.
The exercise includes dredging of the basin, evacuation of waste to a designated landfill site, demolition of illegal structures within the water reserve and the construction of protective embankments to secure the area.
The intervention, coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force, forms part of a broader national effort to restore waterways and drainage channels across Accra following the devastating June 29 floods.
Government has made resources and equipment available for the exercise, with similar works ongoing simultaneously at Oyarifa, East Legon and the Kpeshie Lagoon area.
The Task Force has urged the public to cooperate with the ongoing exercise and to desist from activities that obstruct waterways and undermine flood mitigation efforts.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has reviewed the restrictions on motorbike riding within the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region.
Effective Monday, August 25, 2026, men and women are now permitted to ride motorbikes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.
The curfew hours, however, remain unchanged from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Government has also reiterated that there is a total ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipality and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons, and any persons found with arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
The government has called on Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.
