The St Anthony of Padua Catholic Basic School in the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) of the Western Region has won the annual eighth edition of the Western Region Independence Day Inter-District JHS Quiz Competition, which was held last Thursday at Bogoso, capital of the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality, to commemorate the region’s 66th Independence Day Celebration.
The competition, which featured fourteen (14) basic schools representing their respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, saw Tarkwa Goldfields International School come second with 39 points, followed by Peace International School from Half Assini in the Jomoro Municipal, in third place with 38 points, and Aboadzie VRA International School from the Shama District, which came in fourth with 36 points.
The Christ Leading School from the Ellembelle District finished fifth with 36 points, while the host school Nana Amoako Basic School from the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal finished sixth with 28 points and St Augustinus School from Axim in the Nzema East Municipal finished seventh with 21 points.
The 2023 champions, St Anthony Padua Catholic School representing EKMA, received two brand new Lenovo laptops, one for the GES directorate and the other for the GES basic school coordinator’s office, a trophy, tablets for the tree contestants, text books, plaques, gold medals, and certificates, and the first runner up, Tarkwa Goldfields International School, received two brand new Lenovo laptops, one for the school and the other for the GES basic school coordinator’s office.
Peace International School, representing the Jomoro Municipality, received two Lenovo laptops, one for the school and one for the GES office to be used by the basic school coordinator, bronze medals, text books, tablets for the contestants, plaques, and certificates, with the fourth to fourteenth positions all receiving text books, plaques, and certificates.
The Special Guest of Honour, the Acting Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu whose speech was read on his behalf, commended Nananom of the Western Region for promoting such a commendable initiative and urged the service’s continued partnership.
He advocated for more inclusive participation in the planning and organisation of future quiz events.
HRM Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area and Patron of the Planning and Organising Committee, lauded and thanked this year’s quiz competition sponsors, Goldfields Ghana ltd as headline sponsors, Ghana Gas Company ltd, Takoradi International Company (TICO-TAQA), Adamus Mining Resources, AEL Mining, Engineers and Planners, Westfield, Samarthex Timber and Plywood Company Ltd for assisting the region’s traditional leadership in heralding such an innovative programme primarily to promote education and healthy competition among the region’s fourteen Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) through a quiz competition that has become an annual festival on the GES calendar.

Deputy National Women Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mimi Duah, has openly declared her support for Mavis Hawa Koomson as the next National Women’s Organiser of the party.
In a statement endorsing Hawa Koomson’s candidature, Ms Duah outlined four key reasons why she believes the former MP and Minister of State is best placed to lead the party’s women’s wing.
According to her, Hawa Koomson is a motherly figure who rose from the grassroots and is widely noted for her forgiving nature and ability to foster unity.
“She is a true grassroots mother who easily forgives, fosters unity, provides guidance and arbitrates to ensure all aggrieved party women are brought on board to ensure a unified women’s wing,” she stated.
Ms Duah also pointed to Hawa Koomson’s vast experience, having served as a Constituency Women’s Organiser, Member of Parliament and Minister of State, noting that the experience positions her to provide effective leadership as National Women’s Organiser.
She further described Hawa Koomson as capable of making the women’s wing resourceful, through her extensive network and business contacts, to lobby for logistics, training and financial support for women organisers at all levels.
Lastly, she said the NPP as an opposition party needs fearless, bold and assertive leadership at the women’s front to inspire regional, constituency and polling station women organisers as the party reorganises towards the 2028 elections.
“We need a Women’s Organiser who has been tested, who is bold, who understands grassroots women, and who can lead us to victory in 2028. Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson is that leader,” she stressed.

Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister inaugurates Ghana-Korea Heritage Project Steering Committee
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has inaugurated the Ghana-Korea Heritage Project Steering Committee to provide strategic oversight for a five-year programme focused on preserving Ghana’s heritage sites and strengthening their resilience to climate change.
The project will support climate-risk mapping, digital surveying and 3D modelling, joint research, capacity building, community engagement and modern monitoring technologies.
Korea is also providing specialised equipment, including drones, 3D scanners, digital microscopes, thermal imaging cameras and GPS survey instruments, to enhance Ghana’s capacity to scientifically assess, document and conserve heritage structures.
The partnership, which will run through 2030 and beyond, is expected to deepen Ghana-Korea cultural ties while promoting sustainable, technology-driven and climate-adaptive heritage management for future generations.
