One person arrested in connection with the death of a 21-year-old Level 400 KNUST student
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has confirmed that 21-year-old Daniel Tuffuor, a final-year student reportedly in a relationship with the late Miss Joana Deladem Yabani, has been taken into custody for questioning in connection with her untimely
death.
Miss Yabani, also a final-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, was found dead at approximately 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025, near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre by the KNUST Security Services.
DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, met with KNUST management on yesterday and revealed that Tuffuor was captured on campus surveillance cameras, which played a critical role in his apprehension.
“We have identified the suspect through CCTV footage on the KNUST campus, and he is currently assisting us with our investigations,” DCOP Cudjoe stated.
He further announced an intensified 24-hour surveillance operation on the KNUST campus to ensure the safety of students and staff.
“We are stepping up our efforts to maintain security on campus. Our officers will be conducting round-the-clock patrols and monitoring activities,” he added.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, earlier spoke with the Vice-Chancellor via phone call, assuring her of safety on campus.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, on behalf of the university, expressed her appreciation to the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his support and assurances.
“Waking up to such horrible news was truly saddening, and losing a student in this manner is heartbreaking, especially for parents. We are grateful to the IGP for his swift intervention and the measures that have been put in place,” she stated.
Parliament has confirmed that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
In a statement signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Parliament said the incident had been brought to the attention of the House leadership.
According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are currently in contact with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to gather detailed information about the matter.
Parliament, however, did not disclose the reasons behind the MP’s detention.
“The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement added.

President John Dramani Mahama has approved the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks in the country.
According to a statement, the affected Ghanaians had earlier complied with an advisory issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria for evacuation.
The government said the evacuation exercise is aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of the citizens affected by the attacks.
The statement described the Ghanaians as distressed persons who sought assistance after tensions and attacks against foreign nationals reportedly escalated in parts of South Africa.
Government assured citizens that it remains committed to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
Authorities are expected to work with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa to facilitate the safe return of the evacuees to Ghana.
