Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of the first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr.Kwame Nkrumah, has ditched the Conventions People’s Party, founded by her father as she announces her decision to go independent.

The former Member of Parliament for the area in her bid to represent the people of Jomoro Constituency in the Western again has disclosed she is running as an independent candidate for the December 7 elections.

Speaking to the media on the rationale behind her decision, she said, “I am running as an independent candidate to re-enter parliament through the Jomoro Constituency.”

She said running as an Independent candidate means putting Ghana first and a fight against extreme partisanship that does not deliver development to the people.

According to her, the independent card is a new way of doing politics that offers one an opportunity to collaborate with others to bring development to a locality.

“I don’t want us to be extremely partisan, I want Ghanaians to build consensus looking for the way forward in the future, and I don’t think the future lies in being so entrenched in one party or another,” she said.

She urged Ghanaians to go beyond party politics, which she believes would set the country on a path to development.

Samia Nkrumah added that “Today, there are followers of Kwame Nkrumah in every party, the values of Nkrumah known as Nkrumaism has gone beyond a party, Ghana needs to unite. It cannot be done without people sacrificing,” she concluded.By Edem Mensah-Tsotorme
