Haruna Iddrissu raises alarm as students watch pornography on school tablets
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed serious concern that some Senior High School (SHS) students are using government-issued tablets to access pornographic content.
Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament, the Minister revealed that out of 1.3 million tablets procured for students, nearly 980,000 have been distributed.
He stated, however, that many of these devices have not been properly locked down, allowing students to use them for non-academic purposes.
“My attention this morning, Mr. Speaker, was drawn to the fact that many of the devices are not customized and the students are using them for other purposes, including pornography, which is not acceptable,” Iddrisu told the house.
According to him, the tablets are a key part of the government’s Free SHS policy, intended to provide digital learning tools to students.
He explained that the curriculum is pre-loaded onto the devices to help facilitate modern education.
The Minister emphasised that the government is taking a “high view” of the situation and will impose immediate restrictions on the tablets.
He stated that the devices must be used strictly for academic purposes.
Haruna Iddrisu noted that he inherited a contract worth about $337 million for the procurement and distribution of the 1.3 million tablets.
He confirmed that the distribution across the country is currently ongoing.
“We have to take investment in digital skills and digital technology and its deployment much more seriously,” he said, adding that the goal is to train students to be “globally competitive.”

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executive Committee member and Volta River Authority (VRA) Board Member, Wonder Victor Kutor, has described calls for the resignation of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as premature and unjustified.
He argued that there was no evidence to establish that the minister had committed any wrongdoing to warrant such demands.
Speaking on Joy News in Accra on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Mr Kutor questioned what had changed to justify the growing calls for the minister to step down.
He recalled that the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abu Jinapor, had earlier indicated that the opposition was not accusing Mr Ablakwa of any wrongdoing.
Mr Kutor, therefore, challenged those demanding the minister’s resignation to provide fresh evidence to support their position.
“The call for the Minister to resign is premature, it is untenable. There is no evidence. I mean, what has he done wrong?” he questioned.
He added that documents, including boarding passes, airline receipts and flight manifests relating to the minister’s return journey, had been provided.
Mr Kutor expressed concern that the calls for Mr Ablakwa’s resignation could discourage young politicians from speaking out against corruption and advocating transparency.
According to him, politicians should not be targeted or maligned for demanding accountability, warning that such treatment could create the impression that speaking against corruption could later become a liability when one is appointed to public office.
He maintained that calling for accountability and transparency should not be used as grounds to target public officials without evidence of wrongdoing.
