IGP directs police to wear protective gear with armoured escorts in Bawku
The Ghana Police Service has expressed concern that its personnel and their families have become targets of attacks in Bawku and its surrounding areas in the Upper East region.
As a result, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has banned the movement of police officers and their families to Bawku and its environs.
The IGP further instructed officers already deployed in the region to wear protective gear and ensure they are escorted by armoured vehicles for their safety.
This measure is aimed at addressing the increasing threats faced by law enforcement in the area after two uninformed police officers travelling on a motorbike were killed at Binduri.
The killing occurred shortly after the IGP visited Bawku and called for calm over reports that some police officers had killed a youth leader in the area.
JoyNews’ journalist Maxwell Agbagba commented on the new safety measures, stating, “The police are urged to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure they are escorted by armoured vehicles. The directive stresses the need for swift compliance and should be treated as urgent. Failure to adhere to this could be dangerous, so all officers should take note and comply.”
Meanwhile, a press conference that was scheduled for today, Tuesday, at 9 a.m. to discuss the situation in Bawku was unexpectedly canceled just before it was to begin.

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in the Republic South of Korea for a series of official engagements.
He is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Lee Jae Myung and meet with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Woo Won-shik.
President Mahama will also participate in a ship-naming ceremony at the Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard in Ulsan and deliver remarks at a conferment ceremony at Yonsei University.
Further engagements will include interactions with Ghanaians living, studying, and working in South Korea, as well as a dinner meeting with business leaders and chief executives aimed at promoting investment and strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
The Ghana Highway Authority has announced a temporary traffic management arrangement on sections of the Accra Tema Motorway and the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange as construction work continues on the motorway expansion project.
In a public announcement issued on March 5, the Authority explained that the arrangement forms part of ongoing construction works under the Accra Tema Motorway and Extension Projects.
It noted that the traffic adjustment is required to allow contractors carry out T beam launching works for the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge on the N1 highway.
Under the arrangement, lanes on the N4 northbound carriageway, which serves traffic moving from Accra to Madina, will be temporarily closed.
Meanwhile, the southbound carriageway from Madina to Accra, which currently has four lanes, will be reconfigured into two lanes in each direction to accommodate traffic moving both ways.
The Authority indicated that the temporary traffic changes will take effect from Monday, March 9, 2026 and are expected to last for four months.
According to the statement, the lane reduction is necessary to create a safe working space for construction personnel and to ensure the safety of motorists using the road.
The Authority therefore advised drivers to be cautious, obey traffic signs and cooperate with traffic management officials throughout the construction period.
