Some of our presenters, political talk show hosts are facing threats from political bullies – GJA President

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, has raised alarm over rising threats against some journalists, especially political talk show hosts, from individuals he described as political bullies.
Speaking at the International Press Centre during an engagement with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Mr. Dwumfuor said the threats had become a worrying trend as Ghana edges closer to another election year.
He noted that several presenters had received warnings on their lives, forcing some to work in fear or go into hiding.
He singled out journalist Latif Iddrisu, who has been living discreetly for over a year due to constant threats.
According to him, the GJA is deeply concerned about Latif’s safety and has called on the police to provide him with protection and rehabilitation support.
Mr. Dwumfuor stressed that attacks on journalists were often premeditated and should be treated as a national security matter, not just a media issue.
He assured that the GJA would continue to monitor cases in court and brief its lawyers to ensure journalists who suffer assaults get justice.
In response, IGP Yohuno pledged that the police would protect journalists across the country, describing the media as partners in democracy.
He revealed that specially trained officers had already been deployed to high-risk areas like Akwatia to ensure peace and security during elections.

Parliament Committee on Energy visits NPA

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy continued its oversight responsibilities with a working visit to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) yesterday.
Chairman of the Committee, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, said the visit formed part of efforts to familiarize members with the Authority’s operations and to explore ways Parliament could provide the necessary support.
He explained that the NPA’s work is focused on regulating Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector, a critical area for national energy security.
Mr. Bedzrah noted that the Committee is particularly interested in assessing whether the country has adequate petroleum stock to meet demand.
He noted that rising geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing US–Iran conflict, could have adverse effect on Ghana’s energy supply and pricing.
He further disclosed that the Committee intends to engage closely with the Authority on a proposed new petroleum bill.
According to him, a draft of the legislation will be reviewed and possibly presented to Parliament under a certificate of urgency.
