Media personality and gender advocate Josephine Oppong-Yeboah, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to implementing the Affirmative Action Act of 2024 (Act 1121), aimed at achieving gender equity in all aspects of national life.
She stressed that the Act’s implementation will ensure women’s voices are heard and included in every sector of the country’s development.
In his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) following his re-election, President Mahama, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, reaffirmed his government’s dedication to operationalising the Affirmative Action Act.
He indicated that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure the Act’s provisions, which include a 30 percent target quota for women in political appointments, are fully realised.
“I’m pleased to report that women currently make up 23.21 per cent of all appointments, and we are diligently working towards reaching the target outlined in Act 1121,” President Mahama noted.
The Affirmative Action Bill, passed by Parliament on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, was widely celebrated by women’s rights groups both within Ghana and internationally.
In response to the President’s pledge, Ms. Oppong-Yeboah expressed her support, stating that the implementation of the Act will not only promote gender equity but also foster economic growth, strengthen democracy, and address historical inequalities.
“By empowering women and ensuring their full participation in all aspects of society, Ghana can build a more inclusive and prosperous future for all its citizens,” she remarked, adding, “Gender equality is directly tied to economic growth.”
She further emphasised that the Act will boost the visibility of women in leadership and influential roles, inspiring future generations of women to pursue their ambitions and creating a positive cycle of mentorship and empowerment.

The National Service Authority (NSA) has reopened its portal for defaulters and private candidates to apply for PIN codes for the 2026/2027 national service year.
In a statement issued on August 31, the Authority announced that the portal will remain open from Monday, August 31, 2026, to Friday, September 4, 2026.
The NSA explained that eligible applicants include Ghanaian nationals who completed their studies abroad, private candidates, defaulters and applicants facing challenges with their registration.
It urged eligible applicants who have not completed the registration process to use the extended period to apply for their PIN codes and submit all required documents at designated NSA offices before the deadline.
The Authority advised applicants to ensure that all registration requirements and supporting documents are completed and submitted by Friday, September 4, 2026.
The NSA reminded the public that under the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119), every Ghanaian citizen who has completed an accredited tertiary institution is required to undertake national service.
Management described the extension as the final opportunity for defaulters and private candidates to regularise their status and obtain their PIN codes.
It stressed that Friday, September 4, 2026, is the final deadline for applications for PIN codes under the extension.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has intensified its fire safety campaign across the Eastern Region as part of efforts to prevent fire outbreaks and improve emergency preparedness.
In Akropong, firefighters wrapped up a door-to-door and street sensitization campaign ahead of the Akuapem Ridge Odwira and Ohum festivals.
Residents were educated on electrical safety, proper handling of LPG, dangers of unattended cooking, indiscriminate bush burning, use of fire extinguishers and the need for early reporting of fire emergencies.
In Asamankese, the Fire Safety Education Team concluded a four-day exercise targeting health facilities, churches, professional associations, and other public and private institutions.
Meanwhile at New Life in the Suhum Municipality, the Fire Command combined education with inspections in shops and households.
The exercise focused on LPG safety, electrical hazards, handling of combustible materials, evacuation procedures, and risks linked to welding and fitting operations. Officers also highlighted dangers posed by sparks, fuel, oil, overloaded sockets, poor housekeeping and blocked exits.
The Service says the campaigns will continue across the region to reduce fire risks.
