President John Dramani Mahama has, effective immediately, directed he cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees.
The directive forms part of a broader curb in government expenditure aimed at cutting cost and channeling public funds into priority areas.
The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make.
The latest cost-cutting measure follows sweeping reductions in the size of government through the appointment of fewer Ministers and Presidential Office staff. Other measures have included stopping satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other government facilities.
The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that operators of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso may begin a controlled release of water from the dam from August 11, 2026, if the reservoir reaches a critical level.
In a statement issued on August 4, the Commission said it received an update from SONABEL, the operator of the Bagre Dam, indicating that the reservoir level stood at 232.93 metres as of Tuesday, August 4, with the dam 62.77 per cent full.
According to the WRC, SONABEL plans to commence controlled water spillage if the water level rises to 234.00 metres.
The Commission urged residents living along the White Volta River and nearby communities to take precautionary measures ahead of the possible spillage.
It advised residents to follow safety instructions issued by their local assemblies and other relevant state agencies.
The WRC noted that the notice was intended to help communities prepare early and reduce the risk of flooding should the controlled release become necessary.
The Bagre Dam is located in Burkina Faso and water released from the dam can affect communities downstream in northern Ghana, particularly those situated along the White Volta.
The Commission said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has stated that Ghana’s democracy is “thriving” and not under siege.
His comments were made in a Facebook post on Tuesday, following the New Patriotic Party’s announcement of a planned demonstration scheduled for Thursday.
In the post, Prof. Gyampo argued that attempts to bus people to participate in demonstrations and present Ghana’s democracy as being under attack were unnecessary.
“Ghana’s democracy is thriving and not under siege. Any attempt at busing people to walk, under the guise of demonstration to trumpet it as being under attack, is a useless face-saving tactic by leaders who currently face legitimacy deficit in their party,” he wrote.
The NPP has announced plans to hold a demonstration on Thursday under the theme democracy under siege.
They are expected to begin at the Supreme Court of Ghana through to the Economic and Organised crime office (EOCO) among others places.
