• A man physically abusing a horse
A police horse named Brooklyn has been named the victim in an unusual battery case, after it was slapped for no apparent reason in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The incident happened just before 2 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the intersection of Central Avenue and Third Street North, the department reported in an affidavit.
Two officers were patrolling the area on horseback when one reported seeing a man approach with one hand raised, the report states.
“The defendant walked up behind my partner who was also riding a police horse. I observed the defendant then with his open hand slap the rear of my partner’s police horse,” the report states.
“The defendant immediately looked at officers and stated that he didn’t know he wasn’t allowed to hit the horses.”
The suspect was arrested and identified as a 27-year-old man from Odessa, about 40 miles north, officials said. He was unarmed and not intoxicated, the report notes.
He has been charged with battery on a police horse, according to the affidavit. The charge is a first-degree misdemeanor, and applies to anyone who “intentionally maliciously touches, strikes, or causes bodily harm to a police canine, fire canine, SAR canine, or police horse,” according to the state legislature.
Brooklyn, the horse involved in the incident, is a 1,400-pound Percheron “thoroughbred cross gelding,” which was born in 2003.
“It mainly works in the downtown district (and) is currently one of three horses in the Dept.’s Mounted Patrol Unit,” police officials said. “It was a mounted patrol horse with the Boston Police Dept. until it was donated to St. Petersburg Police in 2009.”

Talented dog jumps across backs of 56 people to break world record
An Alberta baseball team hosted a Guinness World Record attempt involving an Australian shepherd jumping across the backs of 56 people.
The Edmonton Riverhawks, an amateur summer collegiate team in the West Coast League, hosted the record attempt for the most jumps between people by a dog in one minute during a June 14 game.
Chardonnay, a 4-year-old Australian shepherd belonging to dog trainer Jennifer Fraser, bounded across the backs of 56 fans arranged in a straight line in the outfield.
The record’s rules set a time limit of one minute, but Chardonnay managed to set the record in just 16 seconds.
Fraser said she trained Chardonnay to jump onto her back a few years ago, and her trick repertoire has since expanded.
“Jumping across backs is just one of her many skills,” Fraser said.

Stuck parrot rescued from third-floor balcony in San Francisco

Firefighters and an animal control officer in San Francisco came to the rescue of a wild parrot that got its head stuck between panes of glass on a third-floor balcony.
San Francisco Animal Care & Control said on social media that Officer Mullen responded alongside the San Francisco Fire Department on Sunday when a parrot was spotted with its head stuck between two panes of glass on the balcony of an under-construction building.
Firefighters went to the roof of a building and lowered a ladder to the balcony, where they were able to slide the bird upward to free its head.
“They wrapped the bird in a towel and handed it off to Officer Mullen, who checked out the bird,” the post said. “Thankfully they were fine: their wings, legs and neck were all OK, so Officer Mullen released the bird.”
The parrot made its way to a nearby tree to rest on a branch. UPI.com
