A former Deputy Attorney-General, Joseph Kpemka says the arrest of the former Minister of Environment, Science and Technology by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, was lawful.
According to him, the arrest of Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng falls in line with the mandate of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, June 8, Mr Kpemka explained that, “They [OSP] has the power of arrest, they have the power of investigation and prosecution, and then the power of asset recovery, so what they did was not unlawful. Arrest is part of their mandate.”
It emerged on Wednesday June 7, that Prof Frimpong-Boateng, who doubled as Chairman of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), was arrested in May 2023 by the OSP.
According to reports, Prof Frimpong-Boateng who had been invited by the OSP to answer questions related to suspected corruption and corruption-related offences involving the dissolved IMCIM, was eventually arrested and granted a GHS2 million bail.
Prior to his arrest, he had authored a revealing report which suggested that during his tenure as Chairman of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), efforts to combat ‘galamsey’ were interfered with by some persons in government, which undermined his work.
On the back of this, the professor in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, June 7, stated that he felt victimised over his invitation by the OSP which eventually led to his arrest.
He insisted that he did nothing wrong to warrant the treatment being meted out to him.
Prof Frimpong-Boateng, however, maintained that he is not afraid to face prosecution by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The Special Prosecutor, on the other hand, has assured that it will take the “necessary actions” against all persons cited for being indulged in corrupt activities is Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s report.

One person has died and 10 others sustained injuries following a road traffic accident at Akode No. 2, near Aseseso on the Adukrom–Somanya Highway on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, and involved two Hyundai H100 passenger vehicles with registration numbers ER 1564-21 and ER 1660-21.
Personnel from the Kpong Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the distress call. A crew was dispatched at and arrived at the scene.
Firefighters assisted in rescue operations, attending to the victims and ensuring the area was safe.
The 10 injured persons were rushed to the Yilo Krobo Hospital for medical treatment. One person was confirmed dead at the scene.
The cause of the accident is yet to be determined as investigations continue.
Authorities are urging drivers plying the Adukrom–Somanya stretch to drive cautiously to prevent further crashes.

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Signals Bureau (NSB), has arrested suspect Masud Abdullah, aged 35, in connection with a video in which he made statements advocating violence against persons who speak ill of Prophet Mohammed.
According to information available to the Police, the suspect, an Imam, allegedly made the statements while delivering a sermon at a mosque at Ntensere in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.
In a related development, the the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team has arrested suspect Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei alias Apostle Daniel JY Adjei who was seen in a video making derogatory and offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed.
Investigations are on going and both suspects will be taken through the due process of the law.
The Ghana Police Service used the opportunity to remind the public, particularly religious leaders, preachers, community leaders, social media commentators that freedom of religion and freedom of expression must never be used as justification for inciting violence or encouraging members of the public to harm others.
According them, such inciteful utterances constitute infractions and perpetrators will be arrested to face the full rigours of the law.
