President John Dramani Mahama was among a number of high profile guests that attended a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the passing of former President, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills at the Asomdwee Park in Accra last Friday.
The ceremony also had in attendance members of the Mills family, senior government officials, leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, traditional and religious leaders, as well as other dignitaries to honour the memory of the ‘Asomdweehene.’
During the ceremony, interdenominational prayers were said by the clergy while wreaths were laid.
Addressing guests, President Mahama said, the annual observance offered Ghanaians an opportunity to pause and reflect on the life of a leader whose values continue to inspire many.
Describing the late former president as a ‘gentle soul,’ President Mahama said, Prof Mills’ character was his strength and that he proved that leadership could be exercised with calmness, decency and compassion despite the often confrontational nature of politics.
“He believed that kindness was not weakness, humility was not timidity and decency was not incompatible with effective leadership and demonstrated that one could occupy the highest office of the land without losing one’s humanity,” President Mahama said.
He pledged that his administration would continue to uphold the ideals of Prof. Atta Mills, assuring Ghanaians that every decision taken by his government would prioritise the welfare of the people and safeguard the country’s democratic institutions.
