SWAG Honours Illustrious Sports Athletes

Last Saturday night was one for the celebration of sports excellence as over 30 athletes and sports officials were recognised and duly awarded for distinguishing themselves in the year 2025. The occasion marked the Golden Jubilee edition of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards.

The event was graced by illustrious personalities such as the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, Gianni Merlo, the president of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), and heads of sports writers associations from Nigeria, Togo, Benin, among others.

This year’s flagship Sports Personality of the Year award was presented to the football team of the University for Development Studies (UDS) for winning the 2025 FISU Universities World Football Tournament.

On the day when several active athletes were awarded, SWAG also took the opportunity to bestow ambassadorial titles on some retired athletes who performed at the highest level over the last 50 years. Honourees included:

  • Margaret Simpson (Athletics)
  • Azumah Nelson (Boxing)
  • Abedi Ayew Pele (Football)
  • Michael Essien (Football)
  • Kwadwo Asamoah (Football)
  • Stephen Appiah (Football)
  • Samuel Osei Kufour (Football)
  • Adwoa Bayor (Football)
  • Alberta Sackey (Football)

The event was spiced with energetic performances from music icons, Stonebwoy and Fameye, adding vibrancy to the celebration of Ghanaian sports excellence.
