Ms Isabella Wussah-Tetteh emerged the first runner up at the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize (GTP), held at the Western Region on October 5.
The Sege D/A Primary and Kindergarten teacher, walked away with a brand-new Nissan Navara Pick-up Truck worth over GHȻ500,000 as well as GHC1 million worth of insurance cover from SIC and 1,000 exercise books.
Speaking to The Spectator after the awards, Ms Wussah-Tetteh said, she was honoured to have received the recognition considering where she was working; all the way in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region.
She admitted the journey was not easy because the competition was tough, having to put up 10 essays and go through a stringent interview process.
“It was a tough journey but very good and insightful experience. I am honoured to be part of the winners for this year,” she stated.
“Going forward, I would focus on my humanitarian works which focuses on needy learners by extending to other districts to absorb more learners in underprivileged communities.”
“I would launch my foundation soon – the IWUSSAH Foundation which covers all the works in the past and upcoming ones for needy learners. It seeks to support them both financially, provide school supplies, menstrual hygiene products and others to minimise truancy and absenteeism,” she stated.
She called on corporate entities and well-wishers to come on board so that a bigger programme can be organised to reach out to a larger number of people.
“I was doing about 100 learners but with the current recognition, I can at least get more support to go beyond the number and impact the society,” she added.
She urged colleague teachers to continue working hard and do their best to impact knowledge and support young ones to achieve their goals and aspirations in life.
It was female dominance at the national level of the awards as Faith Aku Dzakpasu of the GRETA ‘D’ Shepherd School at Awoshie in Accra was adjudged the Most Outstanding Teacher.
The 2023 edition of the GTP was held under the theme, “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage.”
