Women in Ghana paid 34.2% less than men
Among paid workers in the country, women earn 34.2 per cent less than men, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has said
The data, according to the GSS, was from the first-quarter of the 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES).
The statement which was released to celebrate International Equal Pay Day, stated that “the gender wage gap is lowest among paid workers with tertiary education or more where women earn 12.7 per cent less than their male counterparts.”
International Equal Pay Day is commemorated annually on September 18 to promote efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value.
It said the wage gap was the highest among workers with basic education (60.1per cent) followed by workers with no education (54.per cent).”
According to the GSS, among the population aged between 36 and 60 years, women were paid 33.4 per cent less than men but for the age group 15 to 35 years, women were paid 30.7 per cent less than their male counterparts.
The service said comparing sectors of employment, the gender wage gap was the highest in the private informal sector where women were paid 58.7 percent less than men.
In the private formal sector, it said the wage gap was 29.9 per cent while in the public sector where the gender wage gap is the lowest, women were paid 10.5 percent less than men.
