Commercial transport operators have been urged to help protect schoolgirls from sexual abuse, exploitation and teenage pregnancy as part of efforts to ensure their safety and keep them in school.

The call was made during a sensitisation programme organised by the Girls’ Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES) at the Nsawam-Adoagyiri lorry park last Thursday.

The programme formed part of activities marking the 2026 International Day of the Girl under the theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights!”

Ms Yaa Serwa Ninson, National Associate Programme Officer at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), said girls had enormous potential but faced several challenges that prevented them from achieving their dreams.

She identified teenage pregnancy, child labour and parental neglect as some of the major obstacles confronting girls.

Ms Ninson said parents had an important role to play in helping girls overcome these challenges and urged them to maintain friendly and open relationships with their children, particularly adolescents.

She said children should feel comfortable discussing their concerns with their parents and seeking guidance when faced with difficulties.

A Social Welfare Officer, Ms Doris Nuamah, also appealed to parents not to punish their daughters who became pregnant but rather support them through such difficult periods.

She urged parents to serve as a shield for pregnant girls instead of rejecting or stigmatising them, stressing that they needed care and understanding to help them move forward with their lives.  Read More.
