Original Nii Martey Laryea I leads Homowo celebration in Tsehie Gbugblah

The Oblahiaa Mantse of the Teshie Gbuglah Quarter, Original Nii Martey Laryea l has led the sprinkling of Kpoikpoi within the Teshie Gbugblah Quarter as part of activities marking this year’s Homowo celebration in Teshie.

The Youth Chief in the early hours of Tuesday, August 22, 2023 led the entire Gbugblah Quarter during the sprinkling of the traditional meal “Kpoikpoi.”

It was met with joy and happiness by most indigenes of Teshie who came from all walks of life to catch a glimpse of the ceremony.

The tradition of Homowo started with a period of hunger leading to famine due to failure of the seasonal rains needed by crops in the Greater Accra Region, where the Ga people predominantly dwell.

When the rains returned and they harvested their crops, the Ga people celebrated by creating the Homowo festival.

Homowo means hooting at and ridiculing hunger. It is an annual festival to commemorate the day the ancestors won victory over hunger, hooted at it and ridiculed it with songs and dancing.
