 Mixed passions at Daddy Lumba’s one-week observation

 Hundreds of fans, mu­sicians, dignitaries and family members thronged the Black Star Square in Accra on Saturday to observe the one-week commemoration of the late Ghanaian highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The ceremony, which drew a mix of solemn reflection and joyous celebration, brought together political leaders, clergy and entertainment figures.

Among the dignitaries that attended were former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr Ma­hamudu Bawumia, Mr Kennedy Agyapong and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Music greats including Amakye Dede, Pat Thomas, Sarkodie, Diana Asamoah and Gyakie also joined the fans and family to honour his memory.

Live band performances of Lumba’s classics had mourners singing and dancing, recalling fond memories of the man many regard as Ghana’s greatest high­life musician.

Born in 1964, Daddy Lumba rose from humble beginnings in the 1980s to become a household name.

With more than 30 albums to his credit, his repertoire of gospel, love ballads and social commentary produced timeless hits such as ‘Makra Mo’, ‘Aben Wo Ha’ and ‘Theresa’, securing him a place as one of Ghana’s most versatile artistes.

His death on July 26, 2025 after a prolonged illness sparked a nationwide outpouring of trib­utes.

Plans for his final funeral rites are expected to be announced by the family in the coming weeks.
