For example, a 5kg bag of rice that sold for GH¢95 in 2024 is now around GH¢70, while a whole chicken that cost GH¢85 last year is selling close to GH¢60. The price of cooking oil has also dropped from GH¢75 to GH¢55 per litre, giving shoppers greater purchasing power.
City authorities acknowledged the challenges, noting that the surge in holiday crowds has outpaced existing infrastructure. Traffic wardens were deployed to ease congestion, but the sheer volume of vehicles and people proved difficult to manage. Calls are growing for better planning and coordination to ensure future festive seasons do not disrupt commerce.
Despite the setbacks in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, one thing is clear, the holiday spirit remains vibrant. For many, the inconvenience of traffic was seen as part of the season’s tradition.
