GRIDCo begins restoration after major fault disrupts power supply
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has begun restoring power to parts of the country following a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line.
The fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, resulting in a disruption to power supply in some parts of the country.
In a statement, GRIDCo explained that the fault caused the automatic shutdown of some generating units at the Akosombo power plant and some thermal power plants.
It said the shutdown was triggered by the power system’s protection mechanisms to prevent further damage and maintain the stability of the national power network.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other agencies in the power sector, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and began restoring the system.
According to the company, power has already been restored to some of the affected areas, while efforts are continuing to restore supply to all remaining customers.
“Restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” GRIDCo said.
The company apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage.
It assured customers that all relevant technical teams had been mobilised and were working to fully restore the power system.
GRIDCo added that it would continue to provide updates as more information became available and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as the restoration exercise continues.
