GEN, GEU Celebrate 2025 International Day of the Girl at Diaspora Girls’ SHS

The Diaspora Girls’ Senior High School at Nsawam-Obodan was a scene of excitement and colour last Thursday when students, teachers, development partners, and education officials gathered to mark the 2025 International Day of the Girl (IDG).

The celebration was held on the theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” and was organised by the Girls’ Education Unit (GEU) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the Girls’ Education Network (GEN).

The event featured a parade by the school’s cadet corps, as well as cultural displays and other performances.

In her keynote address, Mrs Hilda Amegatsi, Municipal Director of Education for New Juaben, who represented Professor Smile Dzisi, the Deputy Director-General (Management Services) of GES, traced Ghana’s progress in promoting girls’ education since the 1995 Beijing Conference on Women.

Mrs Amegatsi called on government, development partners, and civil society organisations to renew their investment in girls’ education.

She expressed appreciation to partners, including UNICEF Ghana, CAMFED Ghana, T-TEL Ghana, FAWE Ghana, Child Online Africa, and Power-to-Girls’ Foundation, for their continued commitment to the advancement of girls’ education in Ghana.

The event was chaired by the Amankrado-hemaa of Obodan, Nana Abora Oforiwaa, and had in attendance personalities such as Ms Gifty Asiedu, Director of the Girls’ Education Unit; Madam Elizabeth Afriyie, Director of Education, Akwapim South; Madam Patience Naki Mensah, Headmistress of Diaspora Girls’ SHS; Ms Majorie Tackie of T-TEL Ghana; Judith Nuno of FAWE Ghana; Kezia Dedoo of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition; and Dr Madeez Adamu-Issah, an education consultant.
