Coalition of Political Parties protest against removal of Chief Justice
The Coalition of Political Parties today protested in Accra against the President’s attempt to remove the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to them, the demonstration is to express widespread discontent with the President’s actions, seen as an assault on democracy and the judiciary.
After marching through the principal streets of Accra, the protesters presented petitions to the Judiciary, Parliament and the Presidency.
The lead petitioner, Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin while presenting the petition, said the coalition was unhappy with President Mahama’s action aimed at removing the Chief Justice.
Additionally, he said, the language of the petition is respectful in expressing their view, and he was optimistic that they would receive the appropriate response.
They added that following the successful demonstration, they will outline their next steps in the coming days.
Receiving the petition on behalf of the Chief of Staff, Stan Dogbe said, the successful protest is a testament of the democratic tenets the President wants to instill in the Ghanaians.
He added that “If it were the case like this over the past 8 years, I’m sure the retaliatory politics you mention wouldn’t have occurred. Your reference to retaliatory politics is an admission that the 8 years under Akufo-Addo and Bawumia were not the best.”
He said whatever action that President Mahama is currently taking is in line with the 1992 constitution of Ghana and assured them of handing over the petition to Chief of Staff.
