ATU encourages female students to read science programmes

 Though they are competent to read General Science courses and come out successful, female students do not venture into this field and rather prefer other courses.

In its efforts to attract more female students to pursue science programmes in tertiary institutions, the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the Accra Technical University (ATU) has organised an outreach programme for Senior High School Students.

The schools included Christian Methodist Senior High School (SHS), Odorgonno SHS, and the Ghana Leba­non Islamic SHS, all in Accra.

Alhaji Saiid who spoke on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences,told the students that ATU offered a range of programmes in the sciences and was committed to cham­pioning skills acquisition which would be of much help to them in choosing a career. He assured them that the university was the right place for them to acquire such skills.

He said the outreach programme was to showcase the programmes the university offered and increase its visibility.

Mr Felix Nartey of the Computer Science Department displayed various applications of the computer to the students and assured them that they would not regret when they enrolled in the Department.

On his part, Mr Doudoo Quarshie also of the Computer Science Depart­ment spoke of the varied programmes the Department offered, adding that the programmes would make the students to be self-employed and through that create jobs for others.

Mr Gabriel Ahiable of the Medical Laboratory Science Department also took his turn to educate the stu­dents on the available courses in the department and the jobs that they offered.
