Unnecessary X-ray imaging and indiscriminate diagnostic tests can expose patients to avoidable risks if not properly managed by qualified medical professionals.

The caution was given by Dr Samuel Asante, a gynaecologist from a Kumasi Hospital, when he spoke at a breast cancer screening exercise.

The event was organised by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at its Airport Office in Kumasi for female employees and spouses of male staff.

Dr Asante explained that medical imaging should always be guided by a qualified health professional to ensure the selection of the appropriate examination for a patient’s specific condition and to prevent unnecessary exposure to ionising radiation.

His advice highlighted the importance of responsible medical screening rather than discouraging essential diagnostic evaluations.

Speaking on the health outreach, Ms Aba Adadzewaa Fynn-Aikins, President of the ECG Power Queens Club in Ashanti South, urged women to prioritise their breast health and called on survivors to share their experiences to combat stigma and misinformation.

Ms. Fynn-Aikins emphasized that fear, embarrassment, or the misconception that symptoms will disappear on their own should never stop women from seeking immediate medical attention for unusual changes such as lumps, swelling, or skin and nipple variations.

She noted that open conversations and supportive environments were essential to ensuring affected individuals receive dignity, love, and care without judgment.

The screening event provided participants with an opportunity to consult with medical professionals, gain accurate health guidance, and take proactive steps toward early detection and personal wellness.
